Hannunvaakuna suojelee pahalta. Yhdestä nauhasta muodostuva kuvio synnyttää suojaavan voiman, jonka mahtiin uskoi muinoin koko pohjoinen Eurooppa. Kuvio muistuttaa myös maan neljästä suojelushengestä, jotka asettuivat kukin omaan nurkkaansa ja kannattelivat taivasta maan yllä. Pohjolan kansat antoivat näille hengille nimiksi Länsi, Itä, Pohjoinen ja Etelä.
