Gold coins Finland
In Finland the gold standard was introduced in 1878 when the Mint of Finland started to issue gold coins in two denominations: 10 and 20 Markkaa. These coins had the the same weight and dimensions as corresponding gold coins in France, Italy and other Latin Monetary Union countries. With the First World War the gold standard was suspended but in the 1920’s there was a short lived attempt to re-introduce it. As testimony of that remain the 1926 dated 100 and 200 Markkaa gold coins. Nowadays the only coins minted in gold are commemoratives of which the first is the 1,000 Markkaa piece from 1992 celebrating Finland’s 75 years old independence.
