Coins - Finland
Before independence Finland was pat of the Russian Empire. In 1860 Emperor Alexander II gave Finland permission to issue its own currency. First to appear were Markka denominated banknotes. Coins followed the suit in 1864 when Mint of Finland started its operation. The last Markka and Penni coins were issued in 2001, the year before Euro replaced it as Finland’s currency.
